Brief History of the Faculty of Pharmacy
1853 - Carol Davila sets the basis of the pharmaceutical medical education in Romania
1858 – on 16th of August, by the Act no. 1092 was approved the establishment of "National School of Medicine and Pharmacy
1898 - through the contribution of Stefan Minovici, the pharmaceutical education become academic. Graduates obtain the academic title of pharmacist. It is also established the PhD in Pharmacy.
1914 – The Medicine Faculty Council urged the separation of the pharmaceutical education from the medical education. Because of the war, the emergence of the Faculty of Pharmacy was postponed until after the Great Unification.
1923 - On June the 7th, appears the law to create the Faculty of Pharmacy within the University of Bucharest. At the beginning, the Faculty of Pharmacy has four departments (Chemical and Galen Pharmacy, Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Botany, Analysis of food and beverages) and 9 conferences.
1924 – The Pharmaceutical Education Plan provides 3 years of study in college and two years of training in pharmacy. After a time it is changed to 4 years of study and one year of practice in pharmacy.
1934 - The number of departments increases to six (Biological Chemistry, General Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical and Galen Chemistry, Pharmacology - Pharmacodynamics).
1941-1942 – The Pharmaceutical Education covers a period of six years of study and is structured as follows: one year - pharmacy practice, the first and the second years of study - in the college, the third year - pharmacy practice, the years IV and V of study - in the college.
1942 - The number rises to nine departments, by the appearance of the disciplines Galen Pharmacy, Toxicology and Medicine Industry. New conferences also appear: Chemical Physics, Mathematics, Vegetal Medicines.
1944 - The college building is destroyed by bombing.
1948-1949 – The Faculty of Pharmacy is divided into two sections: "Galenic Section” (3 years study and 1 year practice) and “The Section of Sciences” (four years of study and one year of practice).
1952 - A new curriculum appears which is a synthesis of the academic pharmacy education experience.
1976 – The school moves to its present location in Str. Traian Vuia No.6. Dean is Acad. Prof. Dr. Doc. Dumitru Dobrescu. The number rises to 18 departments.
1986 - For a short period of time, the Faculty of Pharmacy loses its identity, forming a hybrid together with the Faculty of Dentistry: The Faculty of Dentistry and Pharmacy.
1989 – The Faculty of Pharmacy Bucharest regains its identity, returning to the status of independent faculty within the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Carol Davila".
1990 - There is a substantial reform in the pharmaceutical education by eliminating subjects with political, military and agricultural practice.
Today - aimed to improve curricula by introducing new subjects such as: Informatics, Pharmaceutical Propaedeutics, Biopharmacy, Clinical Pharmacy, Pathology and Medical Emergencies, reducing the number of hours to 29-30 hours per week or unifying the name of the disciplines in order to a better adapt to the Syllabus: Mathematics and Biostatistics, Analytical Chemistry and physico-chemical methods of analysis, Pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry, Phytotherapy, Pharmaceutical Management and Marketing, Medicine Industry and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. Currently, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy Bucharest is Prof. Dr. Dumitru Lupuleasa.
Preparation through residency
Since 1993, in the Faculty of Pharmacy Bucharest, annually prepare through residency a significant number of graduates of the faculties of pharmacy. Specialty: General Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Laboratory, Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Industry.
PhD and postgraduate courses
In pharmaceutical higher education there have been constant concern for training development in order to obtain scientific titles.
The teaching and research are conducted in over 20 laboratories, lecture and seminar rooms and a library equipped with over 20,000 volumes (books, treats, monographs, collections of journals in all the areas of pharmaceuticals). Also, the faculty is equipped with a network of computers connected to the Internet.
The most worthy of college students receive scholarships: merit, study and social.
If possible, for the students from the province is ensured accommodation in homes, at reasonable prices, according to the scholarships.
The graduates of the Faculty of Pharmacy Bucharest meet all the current requirements and can easily adapt to the requirements of different jobs in the pharmaceutical and medical profile.
The admission to the Faculty of Pharmacy is a contest, the selection is very rigorous. Besides the number of places financed from the state budget, there are a number of places with fee.
In the Faculty of Pharmacy Bucharest runs a rich scientific activity, materialized through the annual publication of a large number of scientific papers in professional journals in the country and abroad, and also through the making of numerous patents, books or monographs.
As recognition of the special merits, a number of teachers from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Bucharest, have won Romanian Academy or the Academy of Medical Sciences awards.
After 1990 a large opening was made in by participating in national and international scientific meetings.
The Faculty of Pharmacy Bucharest supports the activity of the pharmaceutical scientific societies. The Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Romania, the Romanian Society of Phytotherapy, the Romanian Society for the History of Pharmacy, the Romanian Society of Clinical Pharmacy. Some of these scientific societies are recognized and related to associations and international meetings.
These are just a few milestones in the history of over 75 years of the Faculty of Pharmacy from Bucharest.
